The traineeship

Leading Retail is leading the way by thinking, daring and doing

The Retail Management Traineeship is a three-year program in which you have the opportunity to get to know different fields and banners (Albert Heijn, Gall & Gall, Etos, AH Online, GSO). During these three years you will gain professional as well as operational knowledge and experience. By means of training in the field of personal development, intensive guidance, coaching and challenging projects, you will be prepared to hold a great position at our head office in Zaandam.
Different fields in which you can start as a trainee are:

  • Real Estate & Construction 
  • Supply Chain 

The program in a nutshell

Year 1 – Headquarters: Discovering yourself and the organization

From day one you will be given a lot of responsibility on challenging projects, but also intensive supervision and personal coaching. Together with professionals from your field, you think about opportunities and solutions for our company. You are constantly challenged to be critical, to develop yourself and to always go the extra mile. In the first year you start in a department selected by us and you will follow training courses such as:

Basic & Essentials, Personal Effectiveness, Impact & Influence, Working fact based and Agile working. You will also get started with your own Individual Development Plan and you will learn what your motivations are through Management Drives.

Year 2 – The store: Get started as an Assistant Supermarket Manager!

This year will start with a so-called “jeans internship” in which you will become acquainted with the various functions in the store in three months. After this you will start working as an Assistant Supermarket Manager. Within this position you manage about 150 to 250 employees. Moreover, you are jointly responsible for a turnover of millions. As part of the management team, you ensure that the supermarket runs optimally. Keeping up with the daily dynamics that come with retail is challenging. By doing you learn to manage, coach, motivate, give and receive feedback and communicate at all levels. This year is an experience that will benefit you for the rest of your career. In addition to managing the store, there are also opportunities in our distribution centers or home shopping centers.

In this year you will train according to such as:
Time management, Leadership Essentials, Finance 1.0,  Story Telling 

Year 3 – Headquarters: Next level

In the third year you take all your knowledge, ideas and skills from the store back to the head office. Suddenly you know much better how the stores work, what customers want and what works and what doesn’t work in practice! You participate at a high level and you continue to work on your personal development. You also get the opportunity to get to know other parts of the organization. In this year you influence which department you will start and you follow training courses such as:

Mindfullness, Leading the Future, Kernkwaliteiten, Projectmanagement, Purpose 

During the three-year program, you will collect feedback about your performance several times and discuss this with a personal coach. You also participate in business clinics and there are various Master Classes in which you can participate.

You are

Your heart skips a beat when you walk into a supermarket. You are sympathetic, you dare to take a pioneering role and you know how to make connections. You also have:

  • A master completed before October 2019;
  • Follow-up internship or work experience in the field for which you are applying (maximum two years full-time after
    to graduate);
  • Excellent knowledge of the Dutch and English language, orally and in writing;
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and entrepreneurial spirit;
  • Thinking, daring and doing mentality;
  • Affinity with retail (shopping experience is not required);
  • An autonomous personality.

Preparation

Before you start with the TalentPitch , it is good to know the following things:

  • The duration of the entire TalentPitch is approximately 2 hours (without VideopitchCV).
  • You can pause between parts and continue at any time, but you can’t stop in the middle of a part. It is important that you have sound on your computer so that you can play the videos properly.
  • Start the TalentPitch on time, so that you don’t have to stress before finishing your entire application.
  • Find a quiet place so that you can concentrate all the parts. Completion of this TalentPitch is crucial for a possible next step in the selection process.
